Found this today, thought it was a bullet casing, hahaha!! Not sure the exact date but it's from between 1920-1940. They stopped making metal lipstick tubes before WW2. You can kinda' see the initials HR on the top....:

P.S...: Found a 1958 Canadian quarter not too far from it at a local park.

I'm fairly certain they were around in the 1960s and to some extent, even today. What gave you the idea that they were pre-WWII?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

A few things ...;

1. My wifes mother said it looks EXACTLY like the ones her mother used in the late 1930's when she was a little girl.
2. Looks identical to the ones that I saw online that were from between 1920-1940.
3. Antiques dealer had 5 of them in better condition that were from the same era....

I was wrong about them not making anymore after WW2. The correct info is that they stopped making metal lip stick containers DURING WW2. Can you maybe give a suggestion as to what era you think it's from? I'd like to be able to narrow it down.

It is brass and looks just like the other Revlon containers of that time, just slightly different...:

Not saying it's that exact case, but from that time frame (VERY similar case).

Would the fact that it was 10 inches down be any indication of actual age?  Huh?

During WWII makes more sense. As to the identity or dating, is that the letters HB I see on the top? Any other markings? On the base, perhaps?

The marking on top is HR. Pretty sure that's the Revlon company.....

I believe you are right. House of Revlon rings a bell. Anything on the base or bottom? Look for tiny print around the edge.

Nope, that's the only marking. Looked everywhere. Like I said, the antiques guy I take my stuff to had 5 that were idientical from the same era in better condition. He said it was Revlon. Guess that narrows it house to somewhere in the 1930's - 40's era with the info I was given. I saw the tubes from the 20's and the aren't twist bottom like this one.

Her are some of mine, I do have more but I think my Granddaughter has them in her room "with the warning" not to use them.
The small ones are WW2 they were made small because 'brass" was a necessary war material the all still contain lip stick "paste", I used to throw them away so I have no idea how many went into the trash......HH...Johnnn
