Go Up Go Down

Got out with a detecting friend today, he is a college student studying Environmental Engineering.  I had gold on my mind so we went to a medieval gold mine area about 25 minutes from the house.  We explored for about an hour then went to some areas where we could detect.  The mines date back into the 1400s and are protected, very interesting area, there are a few houses built on top of tailing piles 500 years old here.  Deep into the forest are very small shafts like this one, many were just test holes.  Very rough terrain here, up hill both ways, LOL!

One of the protected mines and a tourist area, ?The Middle Name God Mine? or ?Mittlere Name Gottes Stollen? ran from 1593 to 1993 but not consistently.  There is a huge tailing pile behind me and a late medieval to early 1600 smelting oven ruin to the left here, not in the picture.  There was only a few tons of gold mined in this area over hundreds of years.  The gold was found in very thin veins, only a few small nuggets were ever found here.  I was given a first hand tour by the retired mayor of the town two years ago and he also showed me examples of the gold and the state of finding it, thin veins in hard granite type rock.

Moving on we detected the forest and a small grassy field.  My friend found 4 WWII coins from the 1930s and a newer buckle along with some junk.  I found the following and a few ox shoes, nails and junk.  A copper button, a pewter button and a hinge that looks like a book hinge.

Obverse of a nice little lead seal with the name Duerrenberg stamped on it, it is a town and the town is north of here.

Reverse of the lead seal with what looks like a coat of arms from the town.  Did not find much but it was a fun day.  HH, Mike

Thanks for sharing Mike.  I don't suppose it would do any good to use a gold pan on the tailings.

Thanks all!  There are a few streams in the area where one can pan for gold, I have panned there for a few hours and detected the streams as well and found nothing.  Even took several buckets of sand from the stream beds and panned at home in my utility room over winter two years ago, still nothing.  Maybe some day but it seems like a lot of time involved to find any gold here, hard to justify the time when I could be out relic hunting, LOL!  HH, Mike
