Hi Bugfly,
Are you in Essex? I found hundreds of bullets like that one along the River Thames outside of London if you look carefully and you can find "rifling" marks ,and the callibre is .5" inch then this is one of the mass produced bullets from the rapid fire machine guns from WW2 used against the bombing raiders at that time, they actually look like early "jacketed" bullets like the ones used in the US civil war...
