Hello everybody!

We always try to think about what our most valueable find is but what about the other side of the medal?

Isn't it that we (unfortuntaley) come up with way more junk than treasure? But what the worst find you've ever made?

For example I remember digging up an old oven pipe from about 1.5 meter depth (that's about 4.5 feet) two years ago.

I can tell you folks, that really hurt! I had spent digging at leats 2 hours on it!

Best wishes,

Christian

Oh, I bet I can top this one LMAO! My worst find was a huge chain that was used for a farm machinery. Not sure what machinery it was, hubby told me but, I like to forget that find. It was approx.....3 to 4 feet long 3" wide! Good thing it was kinda balled underground rather then stretched out. Otherwise, I would of had a huge mess. It was on my property....thank goodness!
I did manage to find a pony shoe in the same hole so, it wasn't such a bad dig after all  Grin

Now I have found lots of "crap" after a long time digging...but the strangest find I made was an other metal detector!!

I had driven to VA with a friend..took 12 hours..it was getting dark but we wanted to get the machines out to hunt.
We hit a US Civil War Engineers campsite, we walked in a bit and started hunting..
I was near an old telephone poll that was surronded with tall grass...I got the best signal of my live...and there in the high grass was a cheep "radio shack" $29 metal detector that had been bent around the telephone pole!!!!

I guess it was both my worst find..because it sounded so good, and my funniest find.

I guess my worst find was a 40 mm anti aircraft round found on Civil War battle field Shocked.  I kept it for a week or so and then thought about calling the arsenal and asking them about it.  They showed up about 2 hrs later and blew it up in the field in front of the house.  I hauled it around in the back of the truck for days befor I took it out.  They said it was a live round. I aint got a clue if it was or not...d2

I guess I'm a optomist ... I had a hit in 8 feet of water and after digging and moving rocks for almost a hour, I used my lift bag to haul out a roller off a old bulldozer...lol...I just looked at it as good training for when I do find a canon... Grin

Some Good tips about safety here.  I dug into a spot below a once exploded transformer in Florida, the sand was inundated with that transformer oil, this was right below a light pole on Florida ave over by the cameras house, 26th st or so, anyway that oil is real bad for ya.

And we must consider the fact that we are actually doing an environmental cleanup with our efforts  (TBD!! ENVIRO DIVE SERVICE!), and all these treasure laws and the like make me realize how cheesy and little the royalty and govts are, because we do a lot of work on our own time, for the love of it, and redirect a lot of pollution to the proper disposals.  Sometimes metal detecting is discouraged, and this is because the powers that are do not like people knowing how much trash is actually out there.  I think they discourage detecting because of the finding of extraterrestrial crash debris and artifacts also, too too late, but thats another story anyway.

I tried to bring this environmental cleanup aspect to the attention of the national American groups, but they did not want to hear it for some reason -- all govts downplay the mess out there, mostly because they did a lot of it, and they want $ for war, not for cleanup.  Until somebody gets hurt, like with the lead-seafood thing in Tampa, nobody notices the gargantuan piles of lead sinkers at every fishing spot, around every bottom obstruction, or the old military dump off in the corner of some agricultural field.  This is all times 100 or more in Europe btw.

This gives us direct power with the governments who I believe are complicit in this willful ignorance, and we should not waste our intellectual advantage.  Next time sombody says -- Have you checked the treasure hunting laws lately?  You ask them --Hey bucko, have you picked up any trash lately?

Great point billder, I always bring a bag to pick up trash wherever I dive.  So last year on earth day they were doing a cleanup along the river...when I asked them if they wanted a diver or two to help out they said they were only doing the shoreline where people see...lol...I couldn't believe they even said that...like out of sight out of mind, it really pissed me off so I just clean up on my own and don't tell them anything.
