Go Up Go Down

I finally found a war relic!! I found a 57mm M86 AA shell in one of my neighbors yards.  The thin copper band at its base says this:

Lot MCO-3-17-1943 57mm M86

I will have a picture up as soon as I can.  I think that the shell was on a battleship.  The thing is a heavy son of a gun though.  See ya later.

I hope it aint live.

It seems to be an anti tank round.

Please be careful.

Maybe take it outside.

This could be dangerous.

I sure hope not,

Tabdog

Well, the inside of it is empty.  It stops at one point, and the rest of it is solid.  It is quite heavy.

So you believe that it is Anti-Tank, or air? My neighbor thinks it is anti-air.

I don't know nothing about it, but I will take cautious measures with it.  I found it about five-six inches in the ground.  I cleaned it up with a wire brush to get the rust off, the sparks didn't set it off, thank god.

tabdog;
You hit the nail on  the head, unexploded ordinance has killed a lot of people, still killing them in places like Vietnam.

Great find, though.

Brian AKA goldigger (yikes!)

Good deal.

I had some timer fuses.

They looked harmless,
and they were, but it
made me feal a lot
better to find out.

Congrats on yur adventure.

That round is super cool.

That size round was common
in anti-tank guns in WW II,
and were also used as a small
tank turett cannon.

A little hard to swing that dude
around and get a beade on a
airplane.

HH,

Tabdog

Yes, it made me feel a lot more safe as well to know.  How it got over to the US is not any guess of mine.  Maybe a souvenir that was taken home by a soldier.  Not really sure. Undecided

Anyways.  It is approximately six and a half pounds in weight.  Its range is about three and a half miles.  It had a cap that went over the top of it, and it was made of tungsten.

But, I have done research and you are right about it being a anti-tank shell.  It was fired from a M86 cannon and at the selected tank.

I am just curious as to if it would be worth a little something.  I don't want to sell it, but it is just nice to know.
