This is a 1st place interscolastic medal for "Broadjump" University of Texas.
Back is barely legible but good enough to get information
to closely date it and what specific award it was, but no information
as to who it was awarded to.
24Kt gold filled.
Found in Oak Cliff dump site.
Dates to 1910-1918. Not clear on the specific year, obscured by corrosion.
I found another medal with it and will post it at another time.
Another one of the things that just screams WOW!!!!!
You just never know what you will find there.
I was not sure as to where to post it.
Dump dig, medal, favorite find so I just picked one. Medal it is.

Well done looking at that gave me the idea to look for the old dump where I stay as it use to be a farm so there has to be an old dump some place.

Actually, I found without the benefit of a detector.
It was found while digging in an old turn of the century
dump site here in Dallas. No detector would help in that situation.
They would go crazy with all the metals buried with the bottles.

o4g, i read the part about the dump, thought you were detecting....nice eyeball find then...but do try the detector there, and at all dumps you visit, especially where other people have dug....detect with the discriminator turned high, and only did the very best targets....you won't get much depth, but you will probably be amazed at what you turn up....I hunt a lot of dumps along rr trax in nm, and many are burnt, but I have picked out many coins and buttons with this method...todays detectors are really quite good at picking out round non-ferrous objects even amongst the trashiest situations....go slowly.....good luck.....b

Thank you for your thoughts on this but we have tried them there before, with limited success. The site isquite large.
The metals are quite mixed in the site and pick and choose would slow us down.
Most of the time it a matter of volume of material moved as to pinpointing out one particular object.
Most of the things we are searching for are for the most part non-metalic.
We also screen at times and don't miss much. I had a gentleman screen my throw, about 2 tons, and all he found was one "V" nickle, in very poor condition I might add.
He gave up and started his own dig spot.

that is the case in some places for sure...and screening does get it all...i have been on sites like you are talking about around tampa florida, one place on east adamo seemed to be about 6 feet deep of just rust chips, there were some good bottles there though...and marbles and porcelain doll parts....another place they were putting a walmart in at 275 and dale mabry, and they hit an old 1920's dump, lots of iron, but i did good with the detector there, odd stuff, toys, and a lot of cosmetic cases in brass and even silver....places where there are water, and the screen loads can be washed with buckets of h2o, are nice too, and make that job and the recovering of good things a lot easier...best of luck....b
