and attached rifle has long since came off the medal & deteriated.

Nice find there, and I'll bet it's an early bronze medal by the looks of this one.

Semper Fi, My Dad's a USMC Korean War Veteran and recieved that Medal, and others.
I too am a USMC Veteran...

Nice find Sir- Wink
Jim

"The Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal was first issued in 1896 and was originally a ribbon and medal suspended from a clasp bearing the words "U.S. Marine Corps".

The clasp was eliminated after 1935 and the medal has remained unchanged in appearance since that time.

Enlistment bars, showing each honorable period of service, were used until 1953 when the Marine Corps adopted service stars to denote additional awards of the Good Conduct Medal. Also from its inception in 1896 until World War II, the medal was hand engraved with the name of the recipient on the reverse (except for during World War I when they were numbered on the rim instead). This practice was changed to stamping of the individual's name during WW2 and was done away with all together around 1951.

It is affectionately nicknamed, "The Good Cookie" by Marines."

Thanks auminesweeper,

I appreciate your reply and being a former US Marine and knowing these medals and ribbons, I thought it was the right thing to do in telling what this specific medal was. It appears to me, that it's actually a early period type GC award from possibly WW1 to WW2.

Thanks & this is an interesting forum-
Jim

Yes your exactly right!

I Honor our Country & our Allies Military Forces and the sacrifices they freely gave to make
our countries, people & ways of live in freedom.

I'm proud to have served my country in the USMC, and proud to have carried on the tradition of Honorable service in defense of freedom being the Son of a USMC Korean War Veteran, and the Grandson of a WW2/Korea/VietNam War Veteran. (Patriotic service runs deep in our Family)

Thanks again guys & this forum has much more inside it, than many realize until they search around inside.

Cheers,  Smiley
Jim
