Hello Martin,
Slave tags prices vary from area to area. It depends on material, condition, where it is located and how prominate the slave owner was. The avg. prices run anywhere from $35.00- $225.00 USD. I am certian the prices would be much higher if connected to someone like General Nathan Bedford Forrest who had numerous slaves and traded slaves.

Its been over 10 years ago..but a friend of mine found over a dozen slave tags on an old Georgia plantation..only 2 were worth significant money..he was offered 50.00 a piece for 10 of them...the other two were actually stamped on the back..later he found out..the stamp was made by one of a few actual slaves that made the tags..he was offered 1000.00 for the set..he decided to keep them all. He has lent them out to several museums for display during black history month. There are a few slave tags that have been sold for over $1000.00 a piece..but that is VERY rare. You should google the subject...the info is endless..there are also several price books on the market. All in all..the value is based on how much anyone is willing to pay..much like collectible cards. Those prices were well over 10 years ago...so with our current recession its likely the demand has dropped.
Correction to above post!!he was offered 50.00 a piece..but he did not sell because the 10 were worth several hundred a piece..and the 2 were worth over 2000.00 a piece..I called to find out about that..and as stated.it depends on condition and scarcity. They are in categories of rareness from 1 being most rare and so on.Im not sure how rareness in determined..I would venture to say it depended on the slaves job..the plantation owner..the actually craftsman.etc. I personally have never been that lucky but it was indeed a nice find. I have seen some listed for sale 2 years ago for nearly 3000.00.

I still have a few connections to some active plantations in Georgia and south carolina...maybe someday I will get a chance to find one myself.

found a lot of things associated with slaves but no tag. found a lot of things that i never thought i would find so maybe there is hope. i did find a confederate soldiers ID tag in Louisiana. i may have used up all my luck on that.

when i had my shop in thonotosassa fl a man brought in two pairs of slave shackles, mean looking things, he wanted me to auction them off on ebay, one set brought over 600 and the other set even more...i wish i had kept the pictures of them...this is a long time ago now, like 1998 or so...the shackles were made of iron and not all that great condition - wise, but it was pretty obvious what they were...so remember to dig the bigger iron targets around these places like you are speaking of here....b

Billder. Strange you mention that. i ran across a set last week at out local "elcrapo", most stuff new from China, flea market. One was stamped "Negro woman or child only". They looked like the right age but I don't know squat about that stuff. They might have been a good knockoff. Even if they weren't, I picked them up and sensed a lot of bad karma, so kept on movin Amen

yeah you were probably getting the right reading on that wrong energy...i did not like those things at all, but its a good reminder of what always happens in this funny milieu we are born into, if its allowed to get too far out of hand, if the devo goes where it always wants to...there were two types of people in a bidding war over those i put up on ebay way back when, one was a white supremacist types, the other were black attorneys...both collectors of that stuff, but for vastly different reasons, no doubt...

and fyi, yeah the chinese and the india people will fake ANYTHING they can sell,a nd they are good at it, they can even age the metal chemically so it is very hard to discern from real

that is why dug finds with pedigree are so important...make good records, take that digital cam with you everywhere!
