In the Official Redbook of coin values, on pages 386 to 388, they discuss Civil War tokens. At the onset of the war, pennies were being hoarded, govt supply could not keep up, so stores and tradesmen started having these tokens made to be used in lieu of currency. Also there were patriotic theme tokens made, as in the case of the Wilson's 1 medal. I am still waiting on delivery of a book that covers tokens and store cards.
