Go Up Go Down

Hello folks. I just registered today and just recently got into to metal detecting so first of all "Hi", glad to be part of the forum.  Smiley

Now as to why I posted this in the token section. I recently recovered a token and I am unable to find a perfect match to it in any research I do. The strange part is I have found matches to each side of the token but each side appears to be from a different token all together.

On one side is a typical "Red Goose Shoes" token that says "For Boys For Girls" and "Half the fun of having feet" .. All examples of this I can find on the internet say the opposite side should have some type of monetary value listed. Mine does not. Another interesting point to mention is all the "Red Goose Shoes" tokens I have seen have an embroidery around the edge and mind does not have this.

The opposite side says "9th President USA", "1841 Died", Wm Henry Harrison" with a portrait of the president in the middle. All tokens I have found that have this face have a little fact sheet on the back of them briefly explaining that presidents presidency. Mine does not have that as it has the "Red Goose Shoes" on the opposite side.

My question is, has anyone encountered a token like this? Did the same company stamp both these tokens and possibly make a mistake on this one? What time frame were these made and does anyone have any insight as to it's rarity and possible value of it? Any help is appreciated.

I am attempting to attach some images of it. The token is aluminum and every example I found of the presidential series was a harder metal, copper, bronze perhaps? It has some oxidation and I am hoping the pictures turn out well enough for you to see the detail. Is there any safe way to remove the oxidation but not hurt the value of it?

Pictures are too big for the forum I think so uploaded them to my photobucket account

For the record .. I am officially hooked on  Detecting Your posts encourage me to get back out there and I got blisters on my hand digging this past weekend Smiley

Thanks Mona Smiley
Further research suggests the presidential side is from old Readers Digest tokens? But the date is in a different spot than the examples I have seen.

Thanks for the welcome Pa Smiley I'm finding that its more fun to figure out what you have found then actually finding it. I guess you all know that already but on this one all roads are leading to dead ends.

I went on Ebay and google and am not finding any matches. Isn't there a token website or a book on tokens? You might do a search for token websites and take it from there  Cool

Yeah I have been looking for the past two days at websites and can never find anything. I find stuff on each side but never a cross of the two which gets me thinking the same company manufactured both of the styles but made a mistake on this one. *Shrug*

I dont have a book on tokens as I am just getting into the hobby. I guess I am hoping someone else has some information that can lead me in the right direction.

While it is a possibility that what you have is a mistake, given all the different promotional items Red Goose had, it is possible that this was done on purpose so kids could trade the Presidents.   Don't know that to be true but it is an avenue to persue (by concentrating on the Red Goose aspect).

BA

by the way, welcome .

Ok thanks BA. Originally that's what I had thought. I figured I would find it on ebay selling for a buck and that would be that but given the 100's of "coupon" tokens that I found without being able to find a presidential one I thought something might be amiss.
