Hi guys and Gals,

I was given a small medallion for the USA Academy..... could someone please give me info on this, maybe a photo and date and why it was issued etc, what it should be like..... I am from South Africa, so it is the first time I am seeing this.

Peter, the United States Military Academy is more commonly referred to as West Point......the traditional Alma Mater of the US Army Officer corps.   I take it there is nothing recognizable on the back or you would have shown us that.  To the best of my knowledge and research, there are no USMA/West Point medals.  I believe what you have there is either a souvenir key fob or a pendant for a necklace (either souvenir for visitors or gift to girl friend).  Since it appears to be copper or bronze, I'll lean toward the key fob answer (even if it is a bit small).    Can't give you a date on it since West Point has been in operation for a long time and that particular emblem hasn't changed much over the years.   HOWEVER, since it does NOT include "Duty, Honor, Country", the West Point motto that Douglas MacArthur made famous to the rest of the nation during his Farewell Address to the Corps of Cadets on 12 May 1962, I'd say it probably predates 1963.

With that additional information, I'd say you are most likely correct about it being a pendant from/for a necklace.

Pgill, Interesting medal, I think BA is probably right. A necklace or key chain souviner. I did a quick search and came up with two similar coins although none have the attachment and both had WEST POINT on them.

I'll bet there is an interesting story behind how it got down there. gambol

Thanks Gambol, I have found a few mentions of a similar sort of thing.... But none of them are the same as mine.... My one is made from copper.... It definitely is West Point, just cannot find reference to the exact one I have. It came from a friend of mine who also gave me a USA army button, that is still used today.... Not sure where he got them from though...  Great
