Stacey, that is really Cool, I dont think it was associated with a state militia or national guard unit cause of the USA marking , I think it's from a reg army unit or post or association. kinda hard to tell , I do wonder if there is a way to have it profesionally cleaned to where u can read it better.

i do know there are Huge amounts of  Military Collectors that would probably love to get there hands on that.
if i could tell the type of uniform better it would be easier to date the piece.

I definetly think it's cool and well worth hanging on too. If u find out more about me , holler at me , cause i would like to know what u find out as well.

Thanks

Stacey, looks to me like the figure on the left represents a Seaman and the one on the right represents a Soldier.  Based on hat styles and a few other items, I think you're looking at something that was for either Spanish American war veterans (including the Philippines campaign) or possibly for veterans of the campaigns in the Philippines after the Spanish American war but before the first World War or from the Boxer Rebellion (about the same time).  If it is Spanish American war, it doesn't follow the usual pattern.  At any rate, you're definitely looking at service between 1880 and 1918 just based on uniform styles

Stacy I do know the meaning of the moto on the bottom of the shield
Translating E PLURIBUS UNUM

E Pluribus Unum describes an action: Many uniting into one. An accurate translation of the motto is "Out of many, one" ? a phrase that elegantly captures the symbolism on the shield.

U can read more about it here :

Just as an FYI....this is also the period of time that saw the founding of the first organizations for veterans of foreign wars (many of which were absorbed into the modern VFW).  So you might want to approach it from that angle also.

After reading thru many many websites, it seems a lot of states and organizations would give a token watch w/fob or some kind of medal from the individual states etc, to returning veterans as a token of there appreciation , so it really is going to be hard to narrow down, my best answer would be being that your from
NY or at least u found it there, I would find a dealer who handles the older colectibles from the late 1800s to early 1900s and see if they can help you narrow down your search someone who deals in old war medals and or old watches etc. Like BA said - check with you local VFW most have historians whom i am sure could at least point you in the right direction.  What ever you find out , Plz come back and let us know.

I was thinking key ring commemorative medallion. Looks like something from the Bicentennial but without the Bicentennial Committee approval. That would put it around 1976.

Yes, a good image with the size would be very helpful.
