You guys should schedule a time for a live chat. That would be faster. There is a chat room here. Rarely used. Eugene and I tried it once.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi Guys

Well found out that there are no metal detecting clubs in Cape Town. Now I want to try and see how many I can find one in SA.

Regards Xavier

Hi Xavier....I know of 5 or 6 detectorists in the Cape Town....Most (actually I think everyone) do the beaches. One, Andy, is a diver and seems to always come away with rings. He and John were in Singapore a few months back and they had a slew of rings they found while detecting over there. Pierre, Wolf, Dewald and a few others are some that I have met. Pulltab Pete recently moved to England. My wife and I were guest of Pierre's (while we were on a tour of SA) and that was where I met all of them. Pierre has since visited NY on business but we did spend a few days together.
Regards, Jim

Hi Jim
I know Wolfgang fairly well...used to be my woodwork teacher at school lol!
He has always told me about this Andy chap and his luck with the rings. They are just a group of guys that have been detecting for years...actually they are probably the original SA crew and they have a vast amount of experience and knowledge. I will ask Wolfgang if they would be interested, but they seem to be a close knit bunch.
I am pretty sure that there ain't a single club in SA, maybe a few guys who detect together but no real club as such.
Thanks again for your input.
Kind regards
Viking

HiViking...Yes Wolf is quite the carpenter as I understand it. He is also a motorcycle buff, rides a BMW and when I asked him why doesn't he have a Harley, he just laughed. I enjoyed talking with him, as I did with the whole gang, Lukas included. You are probably right about them being a close knit group. I think most of them are hard workers and their jobs take up a lot of their time.  A fellow from Durban, John, owns a bar and he has his bottle collection there. I've never been to his place, although I've been to Durban but that was before I met John.
Tony is another detectorist that lives somewhere near J'burg. He and Lukas seem to run the show when they have their Boer war hunts. One thing they have in common, they are tall. I feel like a midget around them LOL
Take care, Jim

Jim don't worry buddy I'm only 1.78m so you  might feel more comfortable in our club...there is another midget. Wolfy always makes me laugh,I have met another guy that hunts with them, Phil is his name also a really nice guy.
Wolfy sells minelab and I sell Fisher and Teknetics so you can just imagine the conversation when we get together.
Bought my first machine from Wolfgang.
Went and checked out a building dating from 1760 today to look what might be under the floors...
but the floors where still in and in really good nick lol! The new owner is turning it in to an art Gallery...he seems to be really keen on the hobby, he was entertaining the idea of actually lifting the floors...I told him he was nuts! So we lifted 2 rotting planks and I retrieved a couple of the original forged nails ...he was really stoked.
Went to an old farm this afternoon and found a silver spoon, 1942 2 shilling, 2 buckles (horse I think) something that may or may not be a musketball and a small badge or name plate.
Really hard ground here now but not bad for an hour and a half.
Cheers
Viking

Hi Guys,
Still cannot get hold of Lukas.... maybe changed his number as it just goes to voice mail all the time. I will carry on trying to get a hold of him though.

You are very right about a close knit family of detector.... it is very difficult to get in among them for some reason, but hey we can keep on trying.

Viking, sounds like your trip was a success.... that is fantastic. How about posting some photos of your finds  Wink
