Am curious about peoples methods of transporting detector on airplanes.  Luggage? Carry-on?  Detector case?  Send ahead by UPS?  Looking for safest method.

Hello
I was wondering if the service you are travelling with would allow you to take it on as hand luggage. a lot of sensitive equipment such as medical equipment are carried on as hand luggage due to the nature of the equipment, if you could explain this to the carrier you choose before you arrive for depature I'm sure they would be able to help. other than that have you thought of using a guitar case for travel they make great cases once packed for transporting fragile/sensitive equipment/materials using newspaper tightly scrunched together and packed around equipment also works I have worked in packaging and dispatch for a glass company before and this was the method the manager used to ship art work of glass around Various parts of the world he only ever lost 16 pieces of work in tens of thousands of pieces he has shipped or flown overseas.
Hope i have helped in some way, Good luck

Thanks.  I guess I was thinking along those lines also.

Personally, I've flown with my detector both as hold luggage and as carryon domestically with no problems.  (I haven't decided how I'm handling it on my next trip to Hawaii yet.  I may ship ahead just for convenience)

I found a case a bit larger than an attache case for my Surfmaster PI Pro and glued foam in it. Cut the foam to cradle the detector, loop, batteries etc. I usually check it in baggage, however, have found homeland security usually opens it up once and a while.  Smiley

Similar to that idea (if you only want to take one piece of luggage and your carry-on) is to get one of the rolling duffels that has a separate, reinforced section next to the handle.  All of the detector related material goes there, making it easy for TSA to do a visual if they feel the need, plus providing production for the detector.   And if you add the foam as Jim suggest, EVERYONE who looks knows that you'll know at a glance if anything has been moved.  (I used the duffel method--without the foam--on my last trip to Florida and will use it for most future trips).
