The 1662 ?Oak Tree? two pence, minted in Boston, predates the birth of the United States by more than a century. It is one of only a handful known to exist and is worth $5,000 or more.

Treasure hunter makes find of a lifetime   Searching in Middletown, he finds rare 1662 Massachusetts silver coin

Paul, bet the Isle of Wight detectorist was really surprised when he cleaned the coin off. Maybe brought to UK as "look what those colonists are doing"? I did notice some, in poor condition, were from shipwreck. Now I know what they look like in case I find one <joke, as I think we were still stone age, back then, here> Sue

Sue:
Back in 1974, I was detecting in Providence RI, where an old church had been bulldozed down and had just found a William and Mary coin and my heart jumped when a perfect Oak Tree was uncovered... Turned out it was a reproduction produced by an oil company and given away at gas stations... They produced several different colonial coins and fooled me several times over the years.  But it was a thrill for a while.. LOL  I spent a lot of time detecting all over New England (at the invite of several organizations and one state legislator) in preparation for the bicentennial year celebration. I even hunted all the way up to Ft Henry in Kingston ONT and fort #4 in NH.

Bet finding that coin was a 'thrill for awhile"  Smiley that oil company with it's reproductions probably excited/fooled several other people detecting, too!
