I've read through both links very carefully twice....I do not believe a metal detector was used at all.  It says the current owners found the hidden gold while gardening which is entirely plausible and would not require a detector.

When I was over there in the 80's they were finding 4-6 UXB's every week.   I think they still do.   Shocked

Are you trying to tell us that a long range gold detector was used?  Grin Fountain Laughing Bang Head

No, I am NOT trying to tell you a long range gold detector was used.   I'd say it was sheer luck and having the garden in the right place.  People were stumbling upon hidden gold accidentally and (occassionally) on purpose way before there were metal detectors or "long range gold detectors".
