A prospector has struck it rich after finding a gold nugget weighing more than 2kg in central Victoria.
Mick Brown said he “cracked a can” after finding the 87-ounce nugget while prospecting alone near Wedderburn.
“It took a while to name it but everyone that looked at it was like “fair dinkum”, you know, so that’s what we called it, the fair dinkum nugget,” Mr Brown said.
He told 9NEWS he plans to keep his cards close to his chest as to where he found the buried treasure but said he thought others had already searched in the same area.
While sizeable, the nugget is much smaller than the “Pride of Australia” which was found outside the same town in 1981 and weighed-in at 256 ounces.
The nugget is valued around $135,000 but Mr Brown said he wouldn’t be parting with it for anything under $200,000.

“You know what it’s like when you’re married with four daughters,” he said, “you don’t get to see much of that money,” he said.

I wouldn't get too excited about this "find". According to experienced prospectors in the Prospecting Australia forum, where I am a (newbie) member, the supposed lucky finder appears to be holding the nugget much too easily for something that is so heavy. It's like 2 Kgs or 4 pounds, isn't it? Also, there has been no report in local newspapers. One TV station (CH 9) seems to have grabbed it off Facebook, which is not very smart reporting - with no confirmation of the facts.

The original claim and photo come from Facebook, but nobody can see who actually posted it. And if you had such a find and wanted to keep things secret, why would you put it in FB? And if you were dumb enough to tell everyone about your success, wouldn't you show your local newspaper? Think about it!

I got a look at the new Minelab GPZ 7000 detector on Tuesday evening. A local club member bought one!  :-)
It is selling now for a mere $10,700 AUD (that's 5,393 GBP), but the recommended retail price is more than $12,000 AUD. Remember, though, our GST sales tax in Oz is 10% while VAT in the UK is double that if I remember right. Hey, with that kind of money you or I could buy quite a few gold nuggets outright. That's some food for thought.

The salesman at The Miners Den store in Parramatta NSW said they had sold 40 GPZ-7000 metal detectors already when I was in there on Friday. My own purchases were more modest. I bought a Minelab pinpointer for $185 AUD, and two books.

Cheers,
DavidH

My Machine finds Big Targets Very Deep and it finds the Small Surface stuff too with the Right Coil On it,

You know, RR... I don't think I'll be buying one either!
Maybe a White's TDI Pro (Oz version), designed especially for heavily mineralised gold-bearing areas we have over here. It sells for $2,645 AUD (or 1,358 GBP). Sorry no pound sign on this keyboard!  :-)

Cheers,
DavidH in Oz

Yeah Mate I have been trying to get one of them since 2011 and Whites UK wont order me One, My SL is just as Deep and on  Some tiny stuff it sees them a fraction deeper coz of how smooth it runs, But I still want the Pro or Pro OZ Series,
I'm working on Battery Mods at the moment which Has gone from 4 hours 20 minutes to 6 hours 38 Minutes, and I am working on Version 3 Now. Fingers Crossed.

My SL Doubles what my Etrac and Sovereign GT Does On Small Hammered Cut Half Silver Pennies, If I can't get a Pro I am going to get the Razorback 14" Mono and the 5 X 9 Folded Mono and maybe the 14 X 9,  There's Over 100 coils that Fit the TDI's

RR
