Ancient coins discovered on beach
By Steven McKenzie
BBC Scotland news website Highlands and Islands reporter

Ancient coins have been found on a beach in the Western Isles giving new clues to the far reaching influence of the Roman Empire. . . .

They were found in a sand dune, but the location in the Uists has been kept secret to protect the site. . . . . it was a "lucky find" as the coins were at risk of vanishing in a high tide.

Thanks for the link and the story Sue,
Yes I would agree that was just a very lucky find.
I think you could MD there for 10 hours and get nothing, (and I mean Nothing) mainly because it's so remote and very few people on the beaches there also the weather would keep anyone away from the beaches. (if there were anyone)
That's just a personal opinion of course.

Enjoyed the personal take on the area. Sounds like it was more populated once with the old brooch and pottery finds, but, like the article says, travel was easier by sea than by land a long time ago.

Some of my favorite beaches in Calif were so naturally unfriendly that I loved going there - dressed warmly, of course. That was pre-detecting times when I was searching for agates, jade, flotsam & jetsam.

Thanks for the article Sue.  I enjoyed it very much.  Wouldn't it be nice to find a few of those items. Grin
