Some years back I was engaged to evaluate 10k acres in Terengganu. It was bordered by several limestone mountains and the soil was mainly podzolic in nature interspersed with lateritic horizons, a most refreshing change from the usual acidic oxisols I come across. As I gazed at the limestone, my thoughts wandered to ancient human settlements which may have made their home in those caves.

What crops did they plant on the fertile plains surrounding those mountains? Were they just hunter-gatherers? Maybe more will be revealed soon. It's good that there is growing interest in Malaysia to uncover the past, instead of just planting more and more oil palm. As I've mentioned before in this forum, not all treasures are of silver and gold. Smiley

Thanks for the info.  How cool would it be to stumble across something like that.

How in the world do they figure out something is 16,000 years old? That's pretty out there.

Try reading Christian's post more carefully. The method used for dating is named there.

I saw that, but have no idea what the process is or how they arrive at that conclusion. Will have to investigate more into it.

I've always viewed C-14 dating with a jaundiced eye. I'm no scientist but IMO it is a flawed technology with inherent bias introduced by certain assumptions. In 2002 I submitted a few things I dug up to a European university for dating, and the resultant age given was astonishing. Without getting into the nitty details, all I can say is that it is an "educated" guess of an age at best.
