Antique bomb found
An undetonated bomb that can stem from the 1600s has been dug up at Oslo's Akershus Fortress.

The round, 20-kilo projectile was found on New Year's Day during excavation work under the Old Riding House which for many years housed the Riksteateret, the State Theater.

The ball, which has a diameter of 22-23 centimeters (8.6-9 inches), has a 3 centimeter (1.2 inch) hole that is meant to be filled with gunpowder. After loading, a fuse was inserted and lit and then the whole thing was fired off in a mortar. . . . .

"This is an extremely rare and very interesting find," said senior consultant Britt-Alise Hjelmeland, who has the responsibility for antiquarian maintenance of Akershus Fortress.

The bomb has some melting on each side of the powder hole, which indicates that it has been fired. From its age it could stem from the final attack by Sweden's Karl XII on the fortress in 1716, though he had little heavy artillery with him on that campaign, Hjelmeland said.

Thought of you when I posted it  Smiley Suppose because I'm a gal, but I know so little about war & history of fighting - I was surprised that they were firing things like that back then. Me, I cringe a bit when I find bullets - esp unfired rifle shells as I'd hate to make one go off.

All in due time for relic hunting. Inch of sleet and it's still falling plus low temps near zero. I don't have my detector manual handy, but I'm positive Mr Garrett said not to detect when it's too hot or cold. Sue

Since 6 am I have been called  out twice to run my crew saltng the 401..Canadas main highway..going out later for about 16 hours as we have a storm coming!!

Don't care if you are male or female..your stories are great!!!!

This one is really good because in the US Mortar rounds are better known in the CW..some know that they were used in the War of 1812..but very few know ( anywhere) that they had mortars this large in the 1600s...a very rare find..

Thanl you again Sue...perhaps we should make you the forums 'reporter"  the one and only!!!

Your Friend in Canada

The original "cherry bomb," aye, Sweet Sue?

Lordy but that's a big'un!

I'd say finding live rounds, et al, would be the "downside of detectin' " to quote oRo elsewhere on this forum.  Grin

Back when I lived in Wichita KS, it seemed that everytime we had a drought and the Little Arkansas running thru the center of the city, another honkin' unexploded WWII bomb was dug up.  Always made the front pages of the Wichita Eagle.

Shocked WW2 bombs in Ks? I know some Japanese balloon bombs made it to Ks - winds floated them right over Ft Riley. One was caught in trees near family property. Sue
