Fieldwork led by researchers at University College London and The University of Manchester, has shown the remote Pacific island's ancient road system was primarily ceremonial and not solely built for transportation of the figures.

A complex network of roads up to 800-years-old crisscross the Island between the hat and statue quarries and the coastal areas.

Laying alongside the roads are dozens of the statues, or moai.

The find will create controversy among the many archaeologists who have dedicated years to finding out exactly how the moai were moved,

Interesting article.......doesn't say the roads WEREN'T used to transport moai, just that transporting them was not their primary purpose.   As for Heyerdahl, it is sometimes hard to decide whether he advanced or retarded our understanding of ancient peoples.

Interesting article Spooky thanks Smiley

I agree BA, too many professionals feel the need to hold their theory as the only possible explanation. Clearly in the real world that most of us live in the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

Concave roads could be made by dragging a heavy weight along them....   Wink or a lot of people walking along them over years, or both.

No one really even knows when the moai were quarried, dating any debri under the platforms might give a better idea when. Of course as with a certain south american ancient city the age might be off by a few thousand years and better left alone and forgotten...  Grin

"Thor did his best work taking a boat ride imo  Wink that opened a can of worms didn't it?"   Seems like all of his boat rides resulted in at least as many questions as may have hinted at answering.   Kon Tiki wasn't his only theoretical recreation.   but you're right, he probably should have stopped with the boat ride.

i agree..

We get in a LOT of trouble when we base our view of history on one person's interpretation and do not keep an open mind...

wuzneme nothing similar enough to really be called similar that I know of beyond pictures carved on rocks.

I just feel like opening up the possibility of cross migration was his best achievement BA. Even if the evidence was there all along the academics just didn't want to believe the ancient folks travelled about much, and still don't really want to today. Some very interesting possible discoveries were labeled hoaxes over the years and much info was lost because of it.

I have to chuckle about how every thing done or made in ancient times has religious connotations.

Spooky very true, one must present ones historical theories with a thick skin. No matter how good it is some part of it will likely need adjustment at some point. Guess it depends on if a person is intent on learning or selling books how well they take change Smiley

truer words were NEVER spoken..
I can almost feel those long dead laughing as we try to attach some religious or symbolic reasoning to EVERYTHING we find...

Archie: "This was obviously an important depository and storage area of religious ornaments.."
Ghost: "it was a GARBAGE DUMP!!!!!", laughing...
