Bobbing for bottles finds pieces of history

Donna Frake, staff writer   January 30, 2007

City of Oconomowoc - Tom Fredrich knows the history and mystery that can be excavated from the bottom of a lake.

. . . . In 2001, Fredrich and his future wife were at a local tavern and observed some people scuba diving in the water by the Zion Church.

"Whatever they were doing, they were coming up and sticking things in these buoys. I had no idea what they were doing, but I was fascinated just watching these guys out there - they were just having a great time, you could hear them laughing and just having a jovial time out there," he said.

Fredrich said when the divers proceeded to swim to shore and crawled out of the lake all dirty and muddy he walked over to talk with them.

He found out the men were bottle divers, hobbyists looking for old bottles.

"Out spilled 1880s and 1890s-era druggist bottles from Oconomowoc," Fredrich said. . .
