In the early morning hours of August 21, 1863, Confederate guerrillas led by William Quantrill burned most of the houses and commercial buildings in Lawrence and killed 150 to 200 of the men they found in Lawrence. I've found a few old bullets around town, but don't know that they came from that seige. Sue

Yup, Lawrence was a free state headquarters. In the frenzy of that surprise attack, people were dumping all their valuables into wells. Makes me wonder what all is down deep in the ground around here. Sue

Well, wells may have been used..but to hide things in that period many wrapped up the good stuff and put it in the "out houses" to retreive later..some were not alive to get the stuff back.

We all know of bottle dumps ect...but there are those that go "privy diving"

In older areas digging through old out house sites brings up many great finds as things fell into the hole when you dropped your pants..and who would reach into that!!!

Because of the "crap" in the hole the stuff seems to come out in good shape'

I had a SS buckle that came out of one of these places ( From Germany Of Course) and it was in great shape...( too bad it was stolen with the rest of my collection in the 80s)

Speaking of such - that was going to be my Christmas Day project this year, but hunters had already beat me to the area. At least I was going to go there with a shovel - I'm still a lil iffy about such a thing.  Smiley Awful lot of digging if nothing is there.

Sorry to hear your whole collection was stolen, Dean. Grrrrr!  Sue
