. . . In 1785 the Faithful Steward, a ship traveling from Ireland to Philadelphia, ran aground near the Indian River Inlet carrying a load of English and Irish coins. "They still continue to wash up, even today," Hall said. "We still get a lot of people down here metal detecting and beachcombing."

The Faithful Steward was carrying 400 barrels of English and Irish half-pennies, said Dale Clifton, owner of Discoveries of the Sea, a museum in Fenwick Island. "And occasionally you'll find a gold coin or a silver coin that was basic pocket change."

Clifton has one of the largest, if not the largest, collection of Faithful Steward coins.

"I've been hunting Coin Beach and doing work on that wreck for 30 years and I've found tens of thousands of them," he said. Many of his finds are on display at his museum. . . .
