Very interesting story.  Isn't that just like the big guys and government...   they don't want to do the research or the recovery, but they sure want to get their hand in there and grab a handfull of the loot!

Now that there is a funny story.

The Spanish Stole the Gold from What was to become Peru.

The Peru people are fighting the U.S. Government and the Spanish to get it back.

The American government is cutting the Throats of some of it's own citizens making behind the scenes

deals with the Spanish folks promising the Loot in exchange for Painting that was Stolen by the Nazis back in WWII

Except the folks that found it, there Pirates the Whole Lot!   LOL!

Thanks for posting this one, very interesting.

In my opinion for what its worth I can't see what the issue is here other then greed. Clearly this is about money and a cast of many trying to get their hands on some. Interesting also that desendants also feel they have a right or claim to something that was most likely a right those that sailed on the ship did not have in the first place.

I think issues like this can be complicated by historical value etc however if the pieces are just precious metals in transit then those that found it should have first rights to it. If pieces are of historical value then those claiming rights to it should pay a fair price to have them. Without the costly actions of the treasure hunters in finding such items they would remain lost and thats it, at least now there is a chance to learn from the finds and for those claiming rights of ownership to negotiate a fair price if they really want/care for these items.

Its so easy for those that don't do the work to seek the easy rout and I think these are the Pirates not those that put the hard effort in and re-discoved this treasure. After all did Spain send out anyone to locate this shipwreck, did it ever pay someone to find it or did it take any action or risk to recover this stuff before these guys found it, I don't think so....  Idiot

I think its a bit rich from them to try and claim ownership now.

I'm also concerned that any court would use such examples for concerns of consequences to future finds belonging to the US as a basis in which to not rule in favour of those that found these items.

Basing rulings on matters not yet before any court is very dangerous indeed and I hope they win this fight.  Fight

Thats as silly as saying we will not send your man to jail for murder even though we know he did it because in future you might have our man in your country for the same thing and we would want you to return him, regardless of any laws he has broken....  Crazy

To add to the Cluster Frap, They found the goodies in International waters.

What is Spain doing holding known stolen painting?

What's the deal with the gov's interest in the Returning of the Paintings at the cost of lost taxes generated by the Treasure?
