If A Pirate I Must Be... The Story of Bartholomew Roberts

. . . . the greatest pirate of the golden age. In three years on the high seas he had taken 400 ships as prizes. He commanded at the peak 350 men and 50 guns. His name was feared from Newfoundland to Brazil and along the coast of Guinea. He styled himself 'Admiral of the Leeward Islands'.

. . .  Roberts kept a band to play on the poop for dancing and celebrations - and when going into battle.

From the high seas to the Leith gallows

. . . . Pirate captains sought treasure that would set them up for a wealthy retirement ashore. But for most, the reality was plundering just enough to feed and keep their crew till their next hit. . . . .

Disease and drunken violence ensured few pirates lived beyond the age of 30 and, to keep the numbers up, many sailors from captured vessels were forced to join them. . . .
