Assuming that the Confederacy actually had that much gold at the end of the war (which has not been conclusively established)  this theory makes more sense to me than the traditional KGC legend.  With the bonus that there is data here that can be verified or disproven, which isn't the case in a lot of the KGC suppositions.

A reason i ask of the date of when the KGC may have been formed is just out of my curiosity about it being an older organization than the civil war like the freemasons  I was touring a plantation a couple of years ago IN SPRING HILL TENN.the tour guide a respectable historian and re enactor mentioned  one of the possible reasons  for it not being burned as others was  the owner and the Soldier tasked with laying it to the torch both new each other before the war and were on opposite sides  both were confirmed masons  . if KGC is older than the war then there could be connections between folks from both sides sharing info or helping to move /steal / or hide the treasury   its a long shot  but a possibility to consider that much gold would take more than a few able bodies and tight lips to move and secure it but a good story  hope they find it and solve this part of the mystery surronding it or turn up another mystery they already discovered a shipwreck in the process of researching the gold so it never hurts to try

Assuming that the KGC actually existed, which is open to some debate, the date of origin appears to be sometime in the 1850's with the date July 4, 1854 mentioned frequently.  The 1845 to 1860 date range would correspond to many similar organizations that existed prior to the Civil War some of which may have even merged to form larger organization known as the KGC.  Even if one does accept the existence of an organization know as the Knights of The Golden Circle, which I am personally prepared to do, it does not automatically follow that the real KGC was anywhere near as big or powerful as the believers in the legend of the KGC would have you believe.....The post-war exploits, powers, and influence of the KGC are definitely open for debate.

Now that was some good  reading  and it may be  plausible .

I'd  love  to  be  on board  when  a diver actually  brings  up a  piece  should  the story be true.

Thanks for the  time line and  I agree with you BA. If any of you get to Tenn. I recommend touring Rippavilla plantation  and Columbia  /Spring Hill area   My hat is off to General motors for buying alot of the Spring Hill battfield and giving it back to preservation society to save the area from further building  I also recommend the farming museum and  Their annual MULE day event and parade   a sight to behold .
