An Australian trekker said he has discovered the site of a significant World War II battle in the jungles of Papua New Guinea, complete with the remains of Japanese soldiers right where they fell almost 70 years ago.

Former army Capt. Brian Freeman, an expert on the Kokoda Trail ? a 60-mile trek through rugged mountainous country and rainforest of the island ? said Monday he was led to the Eora Creek battle site where he found the remains of the soldiers.

?On our inaugural trek, we were hoping to find the remnants of a make-shift Japanese hospital and, potentially, relics of guns and ammunition. I never anticipated that we would find war dead,? Freeman said in a statement.

That is interesting. Some of the pictures looked staged but that's understandable. The natives believe in the sprint's  of the dead  must be very strong to stop them from looting the site for useful and/or sale able items.
Thanks Spooky

Hard to imagine such an intact site existing - like the article says, 'it was as if time has stood still' Good read, interesting pictures. Thanks for sharing. Sue

Very interesting article.   Given the conditions in the area, I'm not surprised that the site was "lost" for nearly 68 years.  Nor would I be surprised to learn that other sites are waiting to be discovered.   And, yes, staging appears to have been done for some of the shots......but I rather doubt if anyone on the team was an archeologist, so it's not surprising (for that matter the history of archeology is replete with staged shots).   As long as the artifacts are genuine and the major components of the story are genuine, I'll accept the "artistic" license as the cost of bringing this story and the sacrifice of the men on both sides back to light.

During the initial assault on Iraq.  a couple of buddies and I found four graves with inverted soviet weapons that were bayoneted in the ground, and their helmets left on the top of the butt stock, "the soldiers cross."  Even though they were the graves of the soldiers we were fighting and that were trying to kill us, we all stood there in humbled silence, and took off our helmets and admired these brave men, that even though they were on the opposing side of the war, they had fought and died for their country.  Four heros of mine, that I will never forget, even though it was the enemy I was sent there to defeat.

My father was in New Guinea during World War II.  He often remarked how thick the jungles were.

A very interesting article.  It makes you wonder about the number of other non-found sites that exist.
