Megalithic site unearthed in Sumatra
      


A megalithic site believed to date back to 5,000BC has been unearthed in South Sumatra. Among the artefacts include a 1.3-metre wide relief depicting a woman riding an elephant.

Interesting, Megalithic must refer to the size of the rocks that were found there. You usually hear "paleolithic" or "neolithic" refering to the time period. 5000 BC was paleolithic i believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. gambol Huh?

I wondered about the difference between megalith and monolith. My take on it is mega could be one or more large stones used to create a monument. Mono is basically a geological feature.

Gambol1, you are on the right track.   Megalithic refers to the use of large stones in construction as in Stonehenge and a lot of the burial sites through the UK and the rest of Europe.  If you are interested in learning more, you might find this to be a good starting site:

Interesting link BA , I remember the dolemens in Ireland. I recall seeing one that was engraved with runes by vikings that landed there centuries later. gambol
