Diamonds Are Forever. Oops!

By DAVID COLMAN
Published: December 31, 2006
. . . .  She walked on the beach, lounged by the pool, played darts, went to bed early. When she woke the next morning, she realized that her wedding rings were not on her finger.. . . . .  hours passed and the rings failed to surface, she started to panic, feeling certain that the only place they could be was out on the sands.. . . . One had three diamonds, . . . The other ? the doozy ? had 1,400 tiny diamonds channel-set over the ring?s entire surface, inside and out. . . . . .

The woman she was staying with in Southampton had a bright idea: buy a metal detector. Ms. Bartsch thought of one better: hire a man with a metal detector. Through the town hall, they found a man, who arrived within the hour with a warning that his services were not cheap: $60 for the first hour and $150 for every hour after that. ?I told him I didn?t care,? she said. ?We are going to walk the whole beach with this damn machine."

But there was no need. ?Within five minutes the thing started beeping like crazy,? she recalled. ?Lo and behold, there was the first ring, the one with all the diamonds.? Two minutes more and the second one was found. Both were buried in more than six inches of sand. . . . . . .

The mention of fees was why I posted this story. Not that I'm living on the ritzy E seaboard, but I've always wondered a general price for detecting services and a way to bring it to an end. Price 'em out seems like a good way. Several times I've looked for rings for people & they didn't want me to give up - only to hear from them days later that they'd found it. Don't think most people know where they lose things. Plus I've had people just want me to detect their yards for them - all finds theirs. I did it once - they did all the digging.  Grin Sue

I suppose "tsk tsk" me for thoughts of charging  Undecided  I've had some experiences with  some quirky folks maybe or just need to work on my finesse. One couple wanted me to search for money her grandfather might have buried on their property before they sold it. I asked them how we were going to work out a split in case something was found. They had a lil private conversation and told me they'd just go rent a metal detector.

Another time some people had found some gold coins along a Santa Fe trail creek bank and asked if I'd come and see if there were more. I thought that sounded fun and made the comment that I hoped there would be some and I'd always wanted an old gold coin. End of that deal - they said they'd just go back after heavy rains.

Most likely I need to have a discussion with acquaintances who eagerly give my name to others.  Smiley Sue

I'm laughing - my 1st thoughts when I read the article was that too bad someone hadn't been out at the crack of dawn detecting that beach. Beepin' good find  Smiley Sue
