Night metal detectors 'looting Britain'
By Jasper Copping, Sunday Telegraph

Archaelogists have warned that Britain's historical artefacts are being looted by unscrupulous metal detector enthusiasts.

They believe "nighthawking" - illegal searches at protected historical sites, the removal of items without permission from landowners or the failure to declare valuable finds - is being fuelled by the internet, which allows criminals to make thousands of pounds selling jewellery and ancient coins . . . . .

I think there had been a dispute about this on the UK Detecting Net a while ago.

US sites like Civil War areas have had night detecting/digging problems in the past, too. Or, so, it's been claimed. If people are doing it, seems they'd at least fill the holes to draw less attention to their activities. Maybe it's animals digging and they jump to conclusion that it's humans.

I tried night detecting once - just in an old park and only because it was so hot in the daytime. It was awkward & really hard to find the coins - even with a flashlight.

Thanks for posting the article Sue.  I agree...if someone is 'NightHawking" these sites then they could at leastt be responsible enough to fill in holes.  It's just such a shame when the hobby is put in a bad light.

This article is certainly not sounding like the problem is common metal detecting enthusiasts getting a bit carried away - it's serious looting. Makes everyone with a detector look bad though and that's a shame.

Thieves with metal detectors have stolen Roman artefacts from a major archeological excavation site.

More than 30 holes have been dug in a field at Sudbrooke where experts and amateurs have been working for two years to uncover the remains of a 2,000 year-old Roman villa.. . . . . .

i agree 100% with that Sue,it's strictly a case of hit and run with the looters.

But then there's the other side of the coin. (pardon the pun)
Could it be that the archies are just putting it about to make folks look down on genuine hobby detectorists in order to get them banned eventually.
From what I read archies are not too fond of MD'ers, so it would certainly suit them.

It is a good point Ian but also a worrisome one.  We can always hope at least that this is not the case.  Then again who knows why some people do the things they do.  Maybe they think they have good reason for trying to eventually get it banned but hopefully this is not the motive.
