Hello All
Thank you Seldom for the interesting story. It is bit of a puzzler. 1934 when the discovery was made in the height of the 1930's treasure craze. I am not too sure with some aspects of the story.
Many questions spring to mind.
The date given 1868 is interesting as there was a treasure hunting known going on at that times was Mary and Captain John Welsh Cocos Islands scams from San Fransisco. As for the the Term South Sea is a very generalized term. The Name J L Trinidad. Is this Trinidad the surname of the person or name of the vessel or origin of where the letter was allegedly written?
Was this a cryptic clue to the Island of Trinidae off Brazil? The was a treasure hunt on that Island around that time. Was this J L Trinidad
In trying to understand this story. I checked to see if there was any ships called Trinidad around 1868 Nothing. There are two islands called Trinidad one in the Caribbean and the other off Brazil. But none of them are in generally accepted region termed "South Seas"
Here is another newspaper story on the find.
Hardluck.
