After 16 years of searching, the Fisher family's persistence paid off when they found the treasure-laden galleon Atocha.

I used to subscribe to a treasure hunting magazine, where I read that the Fishers keep leases on the entire coast of florida and up into the carolinas, and if you want to hunt treasure, you have to lease it from them and share whatever you find. They have first dibs on the lease every year, and you can only get it if they don't want it.

How do people in this forum feel about that?

I say good for the Fishers for having the foresight to see the future. Its no different then people buying mineral rights from farms year ago.

Mel has got to be one of the dumbest treasure hunters of all times, even dangerous.  The "X" marks the spot was sitting in Spain all along.  It took him 16 years, for someone else, to do what he should have done first, research.

A blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.  Put anyone out there for 16 years and they will find something.  But Mel didn't, his bud who went to Spain for research did.  Mel's son died looking for that treasure ship and so did hundreds of investors investments.  Those investors were only funding Mel's lifestyle.  It's always easy to con someone out of a few thousand on a treasure hunt, that was Mel's real claim to fame.

To sum it up, Mel was a bad treasure hunter and it was an employee who found the "X" so the treasure could be retrieved.  But that didn't make good copy and Mel never gave up his game of glory, and it's still being played out.  I get sick every time I hear about Mel and his(?) Atocha.

Where did I put that bottle?
