Treasure hunter Odyssey ordered to give booty back to Spain (Scientific American)

Did an American treasure hunter plunder Spain’s ural heritage??  Or should private companies have a right to profit from historic vessels sunk in international waters? [More]

my thought was how can money be a part of heritage its just gold silver etc. i could see if it were artifacts that no one had ever seen before.. also the spanish gov. probably had more knowledge of this wreck and treasure than any other and yet they did nothing till someone else did it for them ..    I say screw you spain finders keepers if you wanted it you should have went and got it and not have sat on you ass for so long. remember its better to be proactive and not reactive sorry for the rant just really ticks me off

AH but think the vessels "manifest" clearly shows that most of the money onboard was "private" money shipments for individuals being carried onboard --thus it is not "offically" spanish govt money ---  its "private funds" and as such legally it belongs to the heirs of the folks that were shipping said money --- NOT the spanish govt * ---as finders and returners of said "private funds" to the heirs --odyssey has a right to claim a hefty "finders fee and a recoverey fee" from the families of the original owners ---. that is if its upheld as being "spanish property " ---the spanish govt can only lay claim to what monies "offically" were govt money according to the cargo records / manifest--- which showed who owned what -- to allow spain to just claim it all --- would be illegally allowing spain to steal money from the "rightful" legal heirs of those that shipped the "private funds" upon the vessel.-- the names of the shippers are known via the manifest --their next of kin can be tracked down.  Wink
