A diver says he's found the wreck of the Westmoreland - according to the article, thunters have been trying to find it for years. Supposed to have been loaded with gold when it sank over 150 yrs ago. More booze - they sure have been finding a lot of that in the seas lately.

Here's another article pursuant to this story:

According to this article:
"Anything that rests on the bottom of Lake Michigan, like a shipwreck, belongs to the state of Michigan," said Tom Ulrich, deputy superintendent of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. State law requires people to request permits from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as the state archaeologist office, in order to bring up wrecks.

"We're very reluctant to give permits for wrecks found in underwater preserves," state Archaeologist John Halsey said. "They'll have to have a pretty good reason to take something off it. We'd like to leave as much as possible on wrecks."

I have to wonder to who's benefit does such a draconian stance serve, with the exception of these drooling bureaucrats, given that disclosure of the wreck site is purely at the pleasure of Richardson.  IMO today's people of the State of Michigan certainly don't benefit.
