There are some major storms on the Great Lakes, even more ferocious than ocean storms due to the relatively warm and shallow waters.  Storms build up fast with very little warning.

The story sure has enough "strange" for a good war time era mystery. Maybe it was just the blizzard . . . still for the captains to get sealed orders that they weren't supposed to read until they were out of the harbor, people acting mysteriously, governments quickly losing interest, etc . . . hmmm

Thanks for the link Sue a very interesting story, in a way its something like the Titanic or the Bermuda Triangle and until the ships are found and surveyed its anyones guess what happened.  Its a real mystery but there has to be a rational explanation as with everything and sometimes the least expected answer solves the problem.
