Treasure diver hits pay dirt with gold cup

A diver off Key West found a goblet of nearly pure gold from a Spanish ship that sank in a 1622 hurricane.

KEY WEST -- Just before Mike DeMar realized he found a rare and priceless treasure, he thought the 385-year-old gold chalice from a wrecked Spanish fleet was a far more common item. ''I thought I was digging a beer can that the metal detector hit,'' . . . . .

The chalice -- more than a pound of nearly pure gold -- came to rest around the spot when the Santa Margarita sank in the Sept. 6, 1622, hurricane about 30 miles off Key West in about 20 feet of water. . . . . . .

That was an incredible find! A similar chalise was recovered from the Atocha wreck years ago.

Actually, it's not Spain he has to worry about. I bought the entire Spanish Fleet that sank there two years ago. Seems I got this e-mail from a lawyer representing the heirs of the fleet who wanted me to help them . . .

You do believe me, right?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
