Fishermen come up with a pearl of a statue while diving for shellfish

CALUM MacDONALD   February 03 2007

It is more catch of the decade than catch of the day after fishermen diving for shellfish in the Firth of Clyde stumbled on an Italian sculpture worth an estimated ?45,000, it was revealed yesterday. . . .

Art historians say the perfectly preserved marble sculpture dates from 1869 and is likely to have come from a 130-year-old shipwreck. The work bears the maker's name with the words "Roma 1869" on the back. Pieces by Rinaldi, whose work is on display in the Louvre in Paris, are much sought after and have fetched small fortunes in the past.

Mr Stewart, 39, said they initially thought the sculpture was just an odd-shaped stone when they swam past it in the murky water.

He said: "We were diving for otter shells, which can be buried up to a metre deep, and were using a pump to wash away the sand. James came across what we thought was just a big stone and we didn't think much of it until I spotted what looked like a necklace.

"We washed away the sand and realised we were looking at a woman's face. It was pretty heavy so we put it into a fish box and attached rope to the handles before attaching airbags to it to get it to the surface. . . . .

Lucky escape for Scottish shellfish divers
Published:  09 February, 2007

THREE fishermen had a lucky escape after hammering away at a live bomb they found.

The trio were so excited by the discovery, which came just weeks after they landed a ?45,000 sculpture at the same spot, they decided to probe it.

But they have now been told it could have gone off any time.
