It was a Image Collection device known as a Camera.

It used what they think was a Cellulose Substrate with a Photo Sensitive layer of Silver Salts covering one side to record Images.

They Think it was referred to as Film!

UH, UH! Cellulose went out in the thirties, and it was NITRO-cellulose! It was replaced by something euphemistically termed safety film. Much less flammable!

When I worked for the local TV station in the sixties, nothing was digital, it was 8-track sound, vinyl records, 16mm safety film, and 35mm slides. One tube type video cam and one transistor cam.

Now, it is hard to imagine those primitive technologies!

Heck.....I used one of those here at work about 5yrs ago. Worked pretty good. You could take short movies with it also. Any one remember the "Disk" cameras? Now that was funny.

I knew about them but never had one, I like the little disc though, they will hold about 280m Bytes!

Any body ever see the kind of box camera like used by Ansel Adams??  Some had lenses, some had pin holes and the photo media was glass plates. There was no shutter, you took off the lens cap and used a watch to count seconds of exposure. Finding the exposure time was an art in itself, the Gum-photo sites explain it the best that I have see (I knew it long, before the art sites.) It is nice to see ancient technology find new niches.
