Go Up Go Down

I'm thinking I might want to start looking for some prohibition era caches here in central/southern Arizona.   Anyway, while fishing for information, I stumbled across this.   I figured someone out there, especially one of our south Texas members, might find a lead or two here worth developing.   I have a feeling this Scharff guy just might have left a stash or two.....and if not him, there are a couple of other potential candidates in the article.

Seldom, if you or anyone else wants to follow up on Al Scharff, here is a little additional information I've found in the last 24 hours that might help:  The Coin of Contraband: The True Story of United States Customs Investigator Al Scharff, written by Garland Roark was published by Double Day and Co in 1964.   More importantly Garland Roark left all of his papers (including his research) to Stephen F Austin University.  The Garland Roark Collection consists of 22 boxes of information housed at the Ralph W. Steen Library and open for research.

If I were back in Texas, I'd definitely persue it myself, but since I only get back for a week or so every couple of years......

Thanks BA after a little research I found some notes I made back in the 80's when I read the book The Coin of Contraband: I picked up a copy today at the library to reread.
Your right this guy is worth a good hard look. Thanks

I ordered a used copy of the book for myself....for a couple of reasons, 1) it might just have a couple of leads that will play out for me here in Arizona, and 2) you never know when I might need to move back to the Hill Country to take care of my Dad (don't see my brother moving there from Houston).....and the best reason of all 3) it's just the kind of stuff I've always liked to read just for the hell of it (better than most fiction).

At the same time  as I came across the Scharff stuff, I've also managed to pull up some leads for the same time period in the Phoenix area that I'm going to follow and see where they lead me.  (It's amazing what kind of stuff pops up when you start searching using the names of early lawmen, politicians, or attorneys.)
