You might be able to develop some good leads out of this story:

Also, do some research on Black Bart, the gentleman stage robber.  He was pretty active in your area.

Unfortunately that tends to happen when you are following a link in a post that is over two years old.....and even more so when the link was to a newspaper article 2 and a half years older than that.

I wish I had a working link to it.  As I recall, it was a really good article.   The idea of focusing on Black Bart or one of the other highwaymen in the area is still a good one though.

Personally, I really like sitting down in the library and reading old newspapers on microfiche just to see what leads come up......and I do the 25c copies very sparingly, preferring to take notes with PENCIL (not pen) and paper.   The nice thing about that method is you will get a lot of leads for different possible treasures.   Some of them you will want to actively pursue as far as you can as quickly as you can, but some of the others will remain rattling around in your brain.....until 'viola, something you read somewhere else looking for something else suddenly clicks and puts you hot on the trail of a scent that others have missed'

There is a very very old Chinese town of Locke located on the Sacramento River.....I have been thinking about talking to some old timers in that quaint little town, and a lot of the Chinese residents have passed away....I am interested in where the ferry boats landed along the river.....or perhaps I will get some other leads by talking to people there.....
People are walking; talking; living; breathing libraries....when they pass away, so do all of the leads...

That is a MOST excellent idea... and don't forget a lot of the Chinese could manage to find gold that everyone else overlooked (not to mention the fact that they panned the the residue from the wash tubs at the laundries they ran).   Heck even a lot of their every day artifacts a re great collectors items now.
