New to treasure hunting, but have a lead on a valuable ring lost during Civil War near Charlestown.  Have narrowed search to one or two fields near town, need some help.  Looking for information on Union encampments in area during August, 1864 and someone with MD exp. thanks.

Awe, the smell of gold has infiltrated your senses. Good luck on your hunt. Sounds exciting to know what you are looking for. I am worse than a beginner medal detectorist. I would be careful about letting anyone else in on your location.

Read about the kinds of detectors people are using for something similar on this site and acquire one. It doesn't take that long to learn to use one. Then, scour both fields. You will find all kinds of things that are interesting to supplement your search for the "ring"

If you can't afford a detector, I have heard you can rent them from some of the shops.
