How do you locate a cavern opening destroyed by Union Troops. What sort of remains could possibly be left by an explosion over a hundred years ago.

Looking for Harmon's Cave in Saltville, VA.

Well, a GPR might be your device of choice however it is very costy. Figure about USD 5000 - 10.00O for a preowned one. Also it requires quite a lot of expirience / training for using it correctly.

Best wishes,

Christian

Here are a few things that I found:

Abraham Smith
Harmon Cave
Saltville Smyth Co VA
Madame Russell House
--------
Legend tells of $60,000 in gold coins belonging to a wealthy plantation owner named Abraham Smith buried in a cave in the Poor Valley, between, Allison Gap and Saltville. Many people believe the cave in question is one locally known as Harmon Cave, but there are several other caves in the area and any of them could be the hiding place.
--------
August 27, 1864, the 13th was at Point Burnside; August 31, 1864, it was brigaded with the 35th Ky., Col. Starling, and 40th Ky., Col. True, in the 1st Brigade (Gen. Hobson), of Gen. McLean division. September 16th the 13th was ordered to concentrate at Mt. Sterling with the other troops under Gen. Hobson, Col. John Mason Brown, Col. Hanson and others, for the expedition to Saltville, VA. It participated in thes campaign and was engaged in all its severe fighting and hard marching. In the battle at Saltville the 13th lost four men killed and 13 wounded. Returning from this expedition the 13th was at Mt. Sterling, Lexington and Crab Orchard. December 17, 1864 Gen. McLean ordered the regiment to Camp Nelson. It remained there on duty until January 10, 1865, when it was mustered out on account of expiration of term of service.
The service of the 13th was over fifteen months, and the entire time was spent in active work; it engaged in mumberless skirmishes and some severe engagements. It never failed to perform every duty required, and had the absolute confidence of the commanding officers.
--------
Colonel - James W. Weatherford Lt. Col. - John A. Morrison

Majors - Harrison M. Hurt; Ferinand D. Rigney; George W. Sweeney

Adjt. - Daniel S. Parker Q-Master - Fielding P. Bland

Commissary - George F. Cunningham Surgeon - Lafayette Bennett

Asst. Surgeons - Wm. D. Stone; Joseph S. Harper
--------
James Frankin Barber was killed at the Battle of Saltville, Va. The rifle fire was so heavy his body had to be left on the field.
--------
Bennett, William James - He was a private who had enlisted on September 1, 1862 who was captured three times and exchanged twice.  He served in the battles of: Hartsville, Tennessee; Bull Gap, Tennessee; Missionary Ridge, Georgia; Dublin Depot, Virginia; Saltville, Virginia.  On one of his captures he was sent sick to a U.S. Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee on January 17, 1864.  He received his final parole at Camp Chase, Ohio on May 10, 1865.
--------
You may get some clues by reading about the militarty engagemants at Saltville.

Thats great Wkilgorejr; I read enough of the military accounts to see that a pretty good description is given of were they went, which roads, hills, gaps, houses &c. This may give you some clues as which salt mines they were able to blow up as they never had access to the whole area. Smiley

Hi, I've read where areas that have been disturbed in the past are visible from an aircraft late in the day, when the sun slopes. I guess you could hire a plane and pilot and just do a visible search in the area where you think the cave is. Wink
