This one could use a lot more research but may be worth it.
U. S. Highway 90 crosses one of the two passes connecting Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne over the Rigolets Bridge. The French built the first fort here and called it Petit Coquilles, the original name of the island upon which it was built.
This fort was replaced by another built in 1793, which was superseded by Fort Pike, built by the Americans in 1818. Near Fort Pike, now a State monument, once stood a military hospital. It is said that a British prisoner being treated in the hospital, and in charge of a payroll of $270,000 in gold coins, made his escape. When he was recaptured nearby, the gold was missing, and it is supposed that he buried it shortly after leaving the hospital. An extensive search was made for the gold, but it was apparently never found.

Seriously. Let's assume each $20.00 was an ounce. That means a hospitalized man managed to escape with 13,500 Troy ounces of gold. That is nearly 1000 Imperial measure pounds, or half a ton. Running from a prison, injured and on foot, it's not very likely. Perhaps he had $270.00 in his giberciere? That's a French word to describe what we now call a Fanny Pack or a waist purse.

I was thinking more like 27000 bucks that brings it down to 200 pounds which one man can move a short way. This is a good example of how treasure size get inflated over time.

Amen on that... and even if he didn't hide it before he was captured, he sure wouldn't be in possession of it by the time he got to his not-so-secure cell. The payroll would have been considered "spoils of war" IF it managed to last long enough for any officers to take "official" notice of it. Holes ALL through this one, but I'm sure there are at least a few people as dedicated to this particular "treasure" as to the all the other stories that defy logic.
