Go Up Go Down

In 1992 I had the priveledge to attend a quail hunting trip with a close friend and several of his professional colleagues. A camp was set up just north of Jakes Corners, AZ in the National forest Land. We hunted over a three day period and had much fun. During the morning of the second day we hunted an area and it all being considered high desert, a person can see a very long distance which can be quite deceiving at times.

We walked and walked in search of that little curly cue, the gambel's quail. As the sun rose over the mountains in one particular spot, I noticed a weird looking area of white rocks on top of a ridge well above my location and at quite a distance away (1/2 mile approx.).I broke away from the party and told the guys I was going to climb to the top of that ridge to see the sights.

As I was getting closer it appeared to be a cemetary atop this hill in the middle of nowhere. I continued walking in excitement as I enjoy looking at old stuff. To my suprise when I reached the top, it turned out to be a very large area of quartz pouring out of mother earth in formations that appeared as tombstones in neat rows. Very weird stuff, things I had never seen nor heard of before. I studied them and there were some veins of things spread throughout this rock. Some of it looked gold in color and some of it was near black. I re-joined the hunting party and continued our search for quail.

A while later I had the chance to travel to the Phelps Dodge Mine in Morenci, AZ as a freind of mine who retired from their sought permission to search their tailings pile for a few specimens he wanted to install into a rock fireplace he was building at his summer home in Overgaard, AZ. During this trip we picked up 5 pieces of criscola rock. All 5 had hairline veins of gold and silver that my friend had taught me how to identify. They appeared to look like the same veins I had seen in the quartz near Jakes Corners. I have never mentioned this to anyone in hopes of returning there someday to prospect. Those dreams will most likely never happen and I have been more than happy to finally share them with people who may or may not act on the information.

Now for the goods, I drove to this location by following the Beeline Hwy.87 south of Payson, AZ and taking the exit for Roosevelt Lake. I believe it to be about five miles to Jakes Corners. Turn Left on a forest rd. and proceed north out of town. Go a couple of miles and take a two track to the Northeast. make a big sweeping curve to the south and that is where we parked. the spot is approx. 1/2 mile sw of there. good luck and happy hunting. G7.

well well thats cool to hear guncollector, Ive been there, did you pass the old fort that was there? it sounds like the same place i pulled up and park,if i am right and it is the same place, there is a creek next to the road, with a mine entrance that you cant see becouse of a tree that is covering it. in that cave is gold on the walls. but becarfull it looks like a death trap. anyway if you ever want to go up there let me know, i,ll go up with you. If you continue on that two track to the end. You will be overlooking a creek from the top of a sloping hill. It's a very big drop off to the water. Across on the other side is a rock wall with what appears to be a cave. We never went any further as we were on a quail hunting trip. The quartz outcropping is due west of that cave probably 3/4 of a mile or more.

Sounds like a place worth checking out....it would be a nice little day trip (or weekend over nighter if you really wanted a chance to explore) from the Phoenix area.

Thats pretty cool, I had no idea at the time that AZ was so rich with mining history. This area included.

Guncollector 7,

Klondike Ike here...

In the central mother load area of California, not on the valley floor, but just into the rolling hills of the Sierra's is a quartz formation called..."Tombstone Quartz".... so named by the old '49'ers...who ventured into the gold fields ...not unlike your day trip in Arizona... Sometimes this formation does carry gold...although more often it does not...

It is a sight you won't forget when you see "tombstone quartz"....

Klondike Ike

Thanks Klondike, That is awesome, I am really enjoying this site since I have found it. I have kept that find to myself for 18 years and am so glad to share the info with someone. There is so much knowledge out there. G7
