This was a really interesting article! It makes sense that gold could precipitate out during an event like that. Gold is a noble metal and as such does not react with very many things and when it does the reaction is very slow, in the temperature and pressure range we are accustomed to. Since most earthquakes propagate from a depth of 10 to 30km it would stand to reason that gold would be slightly miscible in water at that depth and pressure even if it is in the parts per billion. The quantities of water bound to minerals contained in the upper mantle is greater than all the water in the earths oceans.  The pressure released from the earthquake vaporizes the liquid leaving the solutes in place. Over vast amounts of time this material is forced up to the surface where we can access it. Hydro thermal vents and mid ocean ridges have the largest ore concentrations on the planet. This is just a geology students take on things.

I was just watching a "The Universe" recorded program today that suggested a lot of the heavy metals were left near the Earth's surface during the 2nd heavy bombardment of Earth by asteroids and comets.             Detecting
