homefire -- LOL...that was letter (I) for future reference!  I don't know how it got left out of my post.   Smiley

I thought this was one of those clue-like stories where they try to trick you.   If there are no hidden clues here, then I would say its B or D.    B is a good bet, because they said they went back three weeks later for the treasure, but never mentioned they went back for that lagging crewman.    I'd be pissed if I were him.   D could be very likely -- and if you were stealing treasure from someone else, don't take their belongings.  That would be evidence against you.

And I agree with you -- why dig two holes?  Since we know very little about the people, beach, location or anything else, it could be a hundred reasons why.  It could have became a matter of how much can you carry?   Afterall, the town was a couple of days away.   So by foot, that could have been 20-30 miles.   They probably would have tried to walk the beach to search for the next town instead of heading inland.  In other words, they could have buried the treasure right away and walked on the beach for a day before deciding to bury everything else.

And what about the town's people?   Is it possible one of the crew had a little too much to drink at the bar and let it slip that they found treasure?

Since I've spent way too much time thinking about this, I'm going to ask -- Why did you post this?   Was it some sort of challenge?  Or was it an old treasure story you read?

I don't have a big problem with the stuff being buried in two or even three different caches. If any of you remember my trip reports on my St. Josephs Island project you will understand its not uncommon for caches to be hide in different holes.

hm.... it's all a bit too hypothetical for me :Smiley
Maybe there was a cyclone and the sand was moved, leaving nothing?

Go Up Go Down

This is a story i found in a book published in the 1940's and the story is from the 1840's

They did send a search party for the straggler and found him only 20 miles from where they came ashore while all the others had walked 70 miles to the town.

it says they did bury the chest and the belongings where the boat was abandoned.

If they did bury them in the same hole and one of the crew did go back and steal the chest, there would not be a long list of suspects. and it would probably be easy to find out who did it.

i posted this story because i am trying to find out what most likley happened and because it is close to where i live it might be worth going to look for.

Sounds like a good one to follow up on.  Cheek out the beach as it was supposed to be the original spot for the booty.

ok anyone know of any way to narrow down the size of the search area because i have the approximate location of where they came ashore, but since the coastline is all beach its a massive search area. i am thinking i might try to find if there are any written accounts by any of the crew or captain might be some clues as to the location of where they came ashore

As GD BA Myself and others have said many times the more good research you do the better chance of a recovery. Yes research each crew member plus the members of the rescue party. I am guessing you know the name of the ship? Find out where it sailed from and the cargo it was carrying . More then one wreck site has been found from stuff washing up on the beach.
You also need to prove that the ship was carrying gold etc it very well could be a old legend. More then one disaster has produced treasure stories with  no facts to back them up.

i know where it sailed from and it says it was carying ballast, mail and specie, so i believe they were carrying a chest of gold coins. the ship has already been found wrecked on an island off the coast, they sailed to the mainland in a smaller boat. i wonder how accurate the captain could be about the distance between where they came ashore and the distance they walked to the town.

More then likely your going to have a Aquatic search here.

Over the years, I'm betting the beach has been cut back leaving the goodies under water. Cry
