Go Up Go Down

While doing some reserch on the history of the area I grew up in, I found several articles of interest pertaining to Whiskey Bend. This refers to a bend in the Shiawassee River in Saginaw county, MI where there were as many as 25 illegal stills in operation during the prohibition years. I found out at a later date that my own Grandfather used to take a raft from Saginaw City and spend days travelling up the Shiawassee to whiskey bend. After several years in existence I read that the Feds assembled at St.Charles one weekend and devised a plan for a sneak attack upon the Illegal Brewers. The sneak attack worked and many were arrested and brought back to St.Charles where they were transferred into the custody of the Saginaw Sheriff and were transported to the jail in Saginaw.

The legend mentions that the men who made the shine buried their profits in the woods in and around Whiskey Bend. With the sneak attack they did not have time to take any money with them and soon thereafter a spring flood rose above the banks of the river and trashed the woods with debris. It was stated that they looked for buried money for a very long time but only ever recovered a small fraction of what was stashed away. As for the feds, history states that they got their men and some booze and that was about it.

During the mid 1980's I mentioned this to an Uncle and a cousin who had a white metal detector. We travelled by boat down the Swan Creek from the Miller Rd. Access to the Shiawassee River and turned left or upriver. We proceeded quite a ways going under the 2nd hay bridge and continuing up river to whiskey bend. We searched the woods a ways back from the river and found much debris that justified the spot as being a still. Not much longer we found some old tools and the mosquitoes drove us away. We werent prepared for the onslaught. I was never invited back to hunt for treasure and am not sure if my Uncle and cousin ever went back. I would hope that they didn't but ya never know. It was way to far to access by foot and I didnt have a boat at the time.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting...G7

That is an interesting thought, I would imagine many of them did hide thier profits somehow. Neat story, you should ask about it. I made the mistake of waiting too long to ask about a family story and now that person is gone.

Hi there G7,

There are a lot of stories of the Rum Runners on the Detroit River during prohibition.  Interesting because, you don't hear so much about what was going on elsewhere in Michigan at that time.

Thanks, great story.
