Lost Josephine gold mine

Goldminer:
After fourteen years of research and exploration, we are going to make a final attempt to pinpoint the Lost Josephine de Martinique. The Spanish called this famous mine, ?the richest gold mine in the world? Armed with the LMF (lost mine finder), and other geophysical equipment, we will be heading into the Henry Mtns. in southern Utah this week for an extended stay. Our base camp will be located at 8,000 feet, and the search area is some of the most rugged that I have ever seen in any southwestern state.
We have copies of journals, and I have seen physical evidence of Spanish activity in the immediate area of our search. I have seen an old mine workings, arrastres, a smelter, and extremely old tree carvings, along with evidence of earlier searches. The LMF will pinpoint any anomaly, and the use of geochemical testing can tell us if gold is present within the anomaly.

Goldminer:
We are back. Battered, bruised, cut and limping, we have returned from the awesome Henry Mtn's in Utah. What we encountered was totally unexpected. I remember the area from a few years ago as one of the most beautiful in any of the western states. At the end of this first post I will add a picture of how it was, and later you will see how it is now. There was a forest fire there about two years ago, and the destruction was total and devastating to see. I was shocked and deeply saddened to note that everything that I remember was completely gone. All, and I mean everyone of the trees were burned, which means that all of the very old tree markings were destroyed. The old mill site and cabins, the mill flume, everything was gone. In their place was brush, now grown to about seven feet high so thick that you can't see anything from more than 18" away. All the streams are choked with debris that made walking the banks almost impossible. Most of my injuries came from falling in the creeks numerous times because of the debris. Since I can't show you what the tree carvings depicted in any photos, I will draw some from what I remember. We did find good evidence of very old mining actvity and I will post that at the end.

"We are back. Battered, bruised, cut and limping"

Sheesh! Thunting can be brutal, huh! I'm glad you had been there for the "before" as that will sure give you a leg up - even a bruised one - on anyone going there now. I'm guessing the ghost town that used to be in the area is gone now, too. Really like that picture you posted and am looking forward to your next post. Sue

Glad to hear you are back.  Sorry to hear about the fire awhile back though.  The picture you posted of before looks awesome.  I bet it was a really great spot.  I'm sure unfortunately that it is extremely different  now though.  Hope you had a great time and can't wait for the next post.

Goldminer:
OK, I will post a short version of the Lost Josephine story, and then my first attempt at locating the mine. Then, you will see what I encountered on this last trip, and what we found.
I would like everyone to know how much I appreciate Sweet Sue's ability to find information about almost anything. She has been doing this for quite sometime. If anyone needs research, you might ask Sue to lend a hand.
I will begin the story later.
