WW II , Korea and the Cold War RE;Cival Defence Fallout shelters

(1/1)

locator141:
Does anyone know if there is a list of the old Cival Defence fall out shelters ?
After the cold war ended and the cival defense was incorperated into
the homeland defense , I have been unable to garner any information on
these old shelters. I know that most of the major cities had at least one if not
more of these shelters.
Like I said earlier I'm from Conn. and I knew of at least one back there in Waterbury, Conn.
It was in the old Schenley/ Swift  wholesale meats building

seldom:
I have never seen a complete list. Think each area [town city]was responsible for there own building and maintaining of shelters. But guess the Dept. of Defense would have a master list.
If it was me I would just do some library  research on the area of interested.

This.

It was pretty much organized on the regional level for logistical reasons, and short of those set aside for Government entities or command and control, there wasn't really a "list" per se.
I have always been fascinated with these though.

Generally, most of the shelters were re absorbed back into "storage areas", and the supplies scrapped.
You can still find some preserved, and the History Channel program "Cities of the Underworld" highlights some of the remaining and larger ones.
